Yes, I’m taking time out over the festive season to save my sanity!

Ah Christmas, it’s the most wonderful time of the year … if you believe the song! Christmas is certainly magical for children, but as we get older, some of the magic dust starts to wear off. We can find ourselves disillusioned by the whole season if we’re not careful…

Once we’re in the workforce (or in our own business), the end of the year and the festive season is often a culmination of feeling overworked, tired, stressed and for those of us in the southern hemisphere – HOT! I don’t know about you, but I’m in a lather of sweat as I write this post in the warm, sticky sub-tropical heat.  A cool glass of wine and the relaxing waters of our pool await as soon as I finish!  *types faster* 🙂

Back to the Christmas season. I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted right now. While I do usually love Christmas with all its wonderful traditions, trimmings, decorations and gifts, this year I’m just not that into it – I don’t seem to have the energy. I don’t want to be a killjoy, but quite frankly, I’m a little too pooped to party at this point. If we could just delay Christmas a week, and that was a week of rest, I might feel differently.

One of the few things I miss about being a full-time employee is the paid annual leave. As you know, when you run your own business, there are no paid breaks. In fact, you’re lucky to get any kind of break at all. When the clients want something done, you have to respond – and I’ve been doing a lot of responding lately! It’s great to be busy, but there also comes a time when you do need a break too.

Trying to juggle my business, family, friends and the inevitable Christmas commitments has done me in and led me to contemplate what I really need to do at this time of year. The conclusion is clear … I need to take time out! Yes, after a very hectic and emotional year, I need to take some time out over Christmas, that’s for sure. I’m planning on having about 10 days off, to relax and rejuvenate .. and to save my sanity!

So… what should I do during my time out?

Indulge in some self-care

I’m thinking a massage or a facial, and perhaps a little retail therapy.

Take some solid time out to read a book

Reading a book purely for enjoyment has sadly become a rarity for me in recent years. I have a pile of great books waiting for me, so I’m going to make a concerted effort to read at least a couple of them!

Do some major de-cluttering

OK, I admit it. My office has become a major dumping ground and needs some serious de-cluttering attention pronto! The charity bins will benefit and I’ll be able to walk into the room without cringing at the chaos.

Re-think my priorities

I want to reflect on my priorities for 2017 and decide what to devote more of my attention to, as well as the things I may have to let slide a little.

Set some new personal goals for 2017

I’ve been so very busy lately and I haven’t really had time to sit down and seriously think about my goals for 2017. I do love to set some goals before NYE arrives, so next week will be the time to do it! It’s always great to have something to look forward to.

Write some affirmations

In keeping with the goal theme, I also like to write a few affirmations. These will help me work toward my goals for the year. I usually style them up in Canva or something similar, print them out and stick them up on my bathroom mirror to remind me and keep me on track.

Spend some quality time with the family

We’re all busy these days, so it will be lovely to take a little time out to reconnect with my hubby and our teenagers. We’re planning some beach walks and family board games are always on the agenda – although we may need to keep the number for the Monopoly Hotline handy … Yes, it’s a real thing for families who fight over the game! LOL! 🙂

To everyone who has read, liked, commented or lent their support to my blog and website this year, I want to sincerely thank you. I truly appreciate each and every one of you. Without you, I’d just be talking to myself and going slowly round the twist! Merry Christmas to you and yours, and best wishes for an awesome 2017!!
