This is the second in a series of posts on the inspirational women who, throughout my life, have shaped who I am and how I think. Today’s subject: The indomitable Betty White!
American Actress Betty White is amazing. She’s 95 years old, although she doesn’t look it – or act it, and has the most incredible positive attitude.
Betty (I’m sure she wouldn’t mind me using her first name!) has been working as an actress since 1939! She is widely regarded as a pioneer in the television industry, being one of the first women to have control both in front of and behind the camera, and the first woman to produce a sitcom. She is recognised as having the longest television career of any female entertainer. During that her career, she’s made 31 movies and 109 different TV shows.
Her most famous role was that of Rose in The Golden Girls, which ran from 1985-1992. She also played the role of Sue Ann on the Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1973-77, as well as major roles in The Bold and the Beautiful, Ugly Betty, Saturday Night Live, Boston Legal, 30 Rock, Hot in Cleveland and Bones.
Her acting credits even include an ad for Snickers!
Having worked so hard throughout her life, Betty has been recognised with some very well-deserved awards. She has won eight Emmy Awards, include one for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls and Hot in Cleveland. She also became the first woman to receive an Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host in 1983 for the show Just Men. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame in 1995 and also became a Disney Legend in 2009.
She’s so hip, she’s even on Twitter … and she knows how to dab!! 🙂
Betty has been married three times. After two early short-lived marriages, she wed her third husband, TV host Allen Ludden, in 1963 and they remained married until his death in 1981 from stomach cancer. Talk show host Larry King asked Betty whether she would ever remarry, and she replied, “Once you’ve had the best, who needs the rest?” I guess true love never dies.
She is a pet enthusiast and dog lover. She has a beautiful 12-year-old Golden Retriever of her own and works with a number of animal organisations as an animal health advocate.
TV Journalist Katie Couric interviewed Betty on her 95th birthday when she was asked what she was most grateful for. Betty replied: “I just appreciate the fact that people have been so kind to me all these years”. After more than 75 years working in showbiz, she adds, “The fact that I’m still working — that’s the thing I’m most grateful for, that I still get asked for jobs.”
The actress is reputedly worth $45 million … Not bad at all Betty! Now that’s inspirational!!!
Most of all, I just enjoy Betty’s great attitude towards life and her sense of humour. She has a wonderful ability to make people laugh, and that’s a fabulous talent to have.
Here’s cheers to you Betty White! 🙂
